If you have to move large files from one PC to another you can experience problems. Floppy disk hasn't moved too far and today can still hold only 1,4 megabytes of data. That's can be too much for a text file but too small to hold video files, high-resolution photos and music. With the increasing demand of storing capacity media floppy will probably disappear in the future; some new PCs, especially laptops, no longer come with a floppy disk drive.
With a CD-RW drive, you can burn the files onto a R/W CD, but that can be a slow process and just a few PCs have R/W CD.
A Zip drive could be a solution because it uses high-capacity disks but most PC's haven't it.
You could e-mail the files to the other PC, but many e-mail providers limit the size of attached files and the total size of e-mail boxes and it take too much time.
Today there is a new way to move big files around. It doesn't require any disk drivel, or any other hardware besides a USB port, which is ubiquitous in modern PCs. It doesn't need even any software, not even the 'drivers' most other devices need. It works interchangeably on Windows PCs and on Apple Macintosh models. It fits in a pocket, can be reused again and again, and is practically indestructible, yet light as a feather.
Simply plug the device into any USB port and have access to your data. The data transfer rate is as high as 1MB/s! These devices are more or less the size of a car key and allows the user to transport their files both securely and easily. The driverless USB drive requires no software or drivers to operate. and is plug-and-play in newer O/S. The new device will also operate on Win98SE, but because this OS does not fully support the USB Mass Storage compliance, the one-time installation of a driver is required. Today you can find several different capacities of the USBDrive ranging from 32MB to 2GB.

Se dovete spostare file di grandi dimensioni da un PC ad un'altro potreste incontrare difficoltà. I floppy-disk non sono molto cambiati nel corso degli anni e ancora oggi permettono di memorizzare solo 1,4 megabyte. Tale capacità può essere considerata anche eccessiva per un file di testo ma è sicuramente troppo piccola per contenere parti di filmati video, foto ad alta risoluzione e brani musicali. Con la crescente richiesta di spazio di memoria i floppy-disk probabilmente sono destinati a scomparire in un prossimo futuro; già oggi alcuni dei PC più recenti, specialmente tra i notebook non hanno più il floppy disk driver a bordo.
Con un masterizzatore di CD-ROM potete memorizzare una notevole quantità di dati, ma tale operazione è scomoda e richiede parecchio tempo, inoltre non sono molti i PC che hanno un masterizzatore a bordo.
Uno driver ZIP potrebbe essere una soluzione poichè utilizza dischi ad alta capacità (100MB) ma richiede un driver costoso che la maggior parte dei PC non possiede.
Potreste sfruttare anche Internet mandando i file via e-mail, ma molti provider limitano la dimensione massima dei file e delle caselle e con una connessione telefonica impieghereste troppo tempo.
Oggi c'è un novo modo per trasferire files di grandi dimensioni e, particolare importante, non richiede di installare alcun driver! E' richiesta solo una porta USB, ormai presente su qualsiasi PC. Inoltre, nella maggioranza dei casi, è un sistema plug&play che non richiede l'installazione di software nei sistemi operativi più recenti (compreso Linux). Permette di trasferire file tra sistemi operativi diversi e piattaforme diverse (PC con Windows, Linux, Apple Macintosh) e stà comodamente nel taschino, può essere riutilizzato praticamente all'infinito (almeno 100.000 volte), e mantiene i dati per almeno 10 anni.
E' sufficente inserire il dispositivo nella porta USB per avere accesso ai dati. Tale dispositivo, che è gande come un'accendino, permette di trasferire l'equivalente di un floppy disk in meno di due secondi e ha la possibilità aggiuntiva di proteggere la riservatezza dei dati contenuti. L'affidabilità, la compatibilità di trasferimento e la durata sono di gran lunga superiori a quelle di un floppy disk in quanto non ci sono organi meccanici, problemi di contaminazione con polvere o problemi di allineamento tra driver diversi. Oggi è possibile trovare modelli da 32MB fino a 2GB.
